Why a simple calculator wasn't enough to solve the real estimation challenges in home & field service and what we built instead.

When our Founder approached the team with a vision to "revolutionize estimation," the easy answer was obvious: build a digital calculator.
You've seen these tools everywhere. They're essentially spreadsheets with prettier interfaces. Input "10 hours," enter "$50/hour," and get "$500." Simple math. Clean output. Job done.
But as Product Manager, my role isn't just to execute requests—it's to understand the intent behind them and solve the actual problem our users face.
We realized that building a basic calculator would fail our users because it ignores the messy reality of the Field Service Management (FSM) industry. It ignores the three "silent killers" of profitability that we call The Golden Triangle: The Pain, The Scale, and The Gap.
We didn't need a tool that could multiply. We needed a tool that could think.
First, we analyzed the workflows of the business owners. Their intent is to send a quote quickly. But the reality is Mental Load.
You are staring at a blank screen trying to recall a job site you visited six hours ago.
You have multiple images and videos of the job site. Multiple tabs open to understand upto-date market rates to quote accurately.
Next, we looked at growing companies. Their intent is to grow revenue. The reality is Variance.
When an experienced person quotes, they use years of " Knowledge". When a new hire quotes, they use guesswork.
We identified the pain point - estimating on-the-go. Not everyone is sitting at a desk and preparing quotes, some of them are on-field and have to provide a quote quickly and accurately.
Finally, a generic vs detailed context. There is a difference in providing the scope of work as “kitchen renovation” and scope of work - “kitchen renovation where I have to demolish the existing kitchen, clean up the space which is 500 square feet…”. Here, you might forget a few details, but you need someone to remind you, and ask you - Is this what you are looking for?
We realized we weren't solving a math problem. We were solving a knowledge capture, memory augmentation, and consistency standardization problem. So we stopped building a "feature" and started building a Business Partner.
Our AI Estimator is a Context Engine designed to think the way field service professionals think but without the memory gaps, inconsistencies, or time pressure mistakes. It provides you with a detailed cost breakdown and customer-ready estimates within no time.
Whether you’re a business owner or an on-field technician.
Whether you know market rates or don’t.
Whether you already know the materials and tools required, or you’re still figuring them out.
Swivl’s AI Estimator is the logic engine built to think like you, act like you, and help you create fast, accurate quotes every single time.
Instead of asking you to remember everything, our AI Estimator asks intelligent questions:
You input: "Kitchen renovation"
The AI responds like a business partner:
The system doesn't just calculate—it reminds, validates, and fills gaps.
It uses:
We have now rolled out the AI Estimate feature, and it represents a pivot in how we think about FSM software.
If we had listened to surface-level feature requests, we would have built a calculator. It would have been easy, and it would have been mediocre. Instead, we built a Contextual AI Partner.
We didn't just want to help you count your costs; we wanted to help you protect your profits. That is why we didn't build a calculator. We built an engine for growth.
