Turning Small Jobs into Big Opportunities

"We show up, we do good service work. Most of these jobs are a couple hours, maybe a half day. And a lot of the time those clients call us back because we're like, 'Hey, by the way, we also do custom carpentry. We also do kitchens.' That kind of feeds into our lead funnel."

Owning Your Time

"I quickly ended up working for myself. Like if you know your business and your schedule becomes the thing that is demanding your time and energy and freedom. Eventually you just end up working for yourself."

Learning to Stay in Your Lane

"The blessing is a curse because you got to learn to say no and stay in your lane. You can quickly go down a rabbit hole where it's things you don't do often enough and you're not efficient at them."

Learn by Doing

"Find somebody who's doing what you want to be doing and learn from them. Even with today, we have so much social media and YouTube is just such a great resource. But you don't know whether or not you really want to do it until you actually start doing it."

Getting Started and Building Relationships

  • The most important thing is developing established relationships before launching. Reach out to developers, general contractors, and designers in your area to build connections. Attend industry events and network, understanding that the best jobs come from personal relationships and referrals. Do the actual leg work-people notice and remember the effort you put in to make connections.

Learning and Starting

  • Find someone already doing what you want to do and learn from them directly. Work for them, help them, or acquire skills through mentorship. Use YouTube and social media as resources, but understand that fantasy differs from reality until you actually try it. Don't let the idea of what you want to do remain a dream-test it out to know if it's truly for you or to avoid long-term regret.

Finding Your Niche

  • With diverse skill sets, you'll be tempted to do everything. Resist that temptation and stay disciplined about your lane. You'll work inefficiently on skills you don't do often, won't have supplier relationships, and will spend time learning rather than executing. Hone in on what makes you profitable and what you're best at.

Scaling Through Systems and Trained Teams

  • Move from being owner-operators to creating repeatable systems. Train solid crews to execute your expertise consistently. Start with targeted goals-like 10 prefab kitchens per month-that create scale. Use your design and strategic expertise to replicate yourself through trained teams rather than doing all work yourself.

Partnership Synergy and Complementary Skills

Two founders with different expertise-Evan's project management and electrical background paired with Russell's carpentry and construction-create a business stronger than either could build alone. Their willingness to acknowledge each other's strengths and weaknesses creates effective delegation.

Lead Generation Through Service Work

Handyman and service work isn't the profit center-it's the doorway. By doing excellent work on small jobs, they naturally upsell into higher-margin kitchen and cabinet projects. This model demonstrates how smaller services feed into bigger revenue streams.

The Reality of Entrepreneurship vs Expectations

Founders expected freedom but discovered they became slaves to their own businesses. Working 100-hour weeks wasn't the path to independence they imagined. The episode honestly explores the gap between entrepreneurial dreams and operational reality.

Operational Efficiency

Growing from solo operators to managing teams created inefficiency-running 2-3 jobs daily to keep employees busy, then scaling back. Their experience shows that premature scaling hurts profitability and work-life balance, requiring discipline to grow at the right pace.
