The Four Built-In Roles Explained
Swivl comes with four built-in roles that cover the most common team structures in a field service business. These roles cannot be deleted and provide a solid foundation for managing access across your organisation.
Overview
Swivl includes four built-in roles that is Super Admin, Admin, Lead Technician, and Technician. Each role comes with pre-configured permissions suited to a specific level of responsibility. These roles cannot be deleted, but you can create custom roles if your team needs a different permission set.

- Super Admin: can view and manage all roles
- Admin: can view role details
The four built-in roles
Super Admin
The Super Admin has unrestricted access to every area of Swivl. This role is intended for business owners or operations managers who need full control.
Key access:
- All Settings sections including Company Profile, Integrations, Team & Access, and Communication
- Full financial access: invoices, payments, and reports
- User management: invite, edit, and deactivate any user
- Role management: create, edit, and delete custom roles
- Subscription and billing management
Admin
Admins have broad access to most operational areas but restricted access to certain sensitive settings. This role is suitable for office managers or team leads who handle day-to-day operations.
Key access:
- View and manage users (with some restrictions)
- Access to scheduling, dispatching, and customer management
- Limited settings access it varies by module
Lead Technician
Lead Technicians have access to field operations features and can manage tasks assigned to their team. They do not have access to company-wide settings.
Key access:
- View and manage assigned work orders and tasks
- Access to customer details relevant to their tasks
- Own profile management only
- No access to Settings except My Profile
Technician
Technicians have the most limited access, focused on completing their assigned tasks in the field.
Key access:
- View assigned work orders and tasks
- Update task status and add notes
- Own profile management only
- No access to Settings except My Profile

If the Edit icon is greyed out on the Roles & Permissions table, that role cannot be modified. The Super Admin role is always locked and cannot be edited.
Tips
- Start with the built-in roles and only create custom roles when you need permissions that do not fit the four defaults.
- Assign the least privileged role that still allows the user to do their job this protects sensitive data and reduces the risk of accidental changes.
- Review role assignments periodically, especially when team members take on new responsibilities.
